Notes Regarding Suite for String Orchestra Parts
Although Suite for String Orchestra is supplied with parts for a profesional string orchestra, additional, alternative parts are available if necessary, particularly if this work is to be played by a young string orchestra. These parts are as follows:
Violin III (Viola Treble Clef): instead of, or in addition to viola parts
Cello II: doubling low viola if there is are not enough viola players
The conductor should make sure that each part is adequately covered, regardless of the part set used; e.g. if there are few or no violas and Violin III parts are used, Cello II parts should also be used so that the entire viola part is covered. The conductor should strive to create a balance between all of the parts, particularly if there are abnormally large Violin I and II and/or Violoncello sections. It is also requested that the contrabass part be covered by at least two bass players. If there are no young bassists available, professional bassists should be used, i.e. under no circumstances should the contrabass part be omitted.
