An urban redeveloper puts a renovated tenement on the market for artists only, with insanely affordable rents. Soon sculptors, composers, writers, dancers, actors and performance artists are beating down the doors for a loft. Overnight, an artist’s colony forms in the new building, an oasis of culture in a dicey desert of urban blight. As the artists get to know each other, we get to know them—and their frustrating, ridiculous, wonderful, crazy fields. Artists fall in love, hustle for a living, experience breakthroughs and barely survive breakdowns. Meanwhile the neighborhood around them keeps getting cleaner and richer.
