Program Notes

I am always amazed by the glowing lights that appear as if from nowhere from the top of the crest on route 13 driving towards Ithaca, NY. This small town looks like an energized, glowing metropolis. The title Bright Horizons (chosen by the students themselves) reflects this phenomenon, but it is also a metaphor for optimism. In a literal sense, a horizon is the line where the earth and sky appear to meet. Metaphorically, if our daily lives are grounded on earth and our dreams are skyward-bound, then "bright horizons" could represent those moments where our dreams take flight, where the imaginary or fantastic become real. Throughout the work, there are optimistic-sounding dance-like sections, but also others that are dark, counter-balancing the lighter, brighter moments.
